Fish pole Bamboo, Golden Bamboo.  The old standby. Probably the most widely grown bamboo in the US. Interesting knobs near the base that make natural handles for walking sticks and fishing poles.

A real stunner. Hardy, interesting striping, cranberry-red highlights in spring and summer, occasionally crooked stems. Does well in containers, as a screen or forming a grove. Hard not to like this bamboo.

Japanese Arrow Bamboo or Yadake.  A great hedge forming or screening bamboo.  Good in containers as well.  Some call it a fast-spreading clumper or a slow runner.  For us it spreads about one foot per year and we easily control with mowing.

Walking Stick Bamboo

Avg Height (ft.): 15

Diameter: 0.75 inch

Hardiness: 10 F

Sun: sun to shade (may struggle with very intense full afternoon sun)

Walking Stick Bamboo has interesting swollen nodes and a more wispy appearance than most.  Can be a fast spreader but good in containers.

Temple Bamboo

Avg Height (ft.): 20-25

Diameter: 1.5 inches

Hardiness: -5º F

Sun: full sun to mostly shade

Green Temple Bamboo grows and spreads fast.  Viridis in Latin translates to “green, growth and vitality”. This stuff grows like crazy, so use containment methods or let it go if you have room.  It is good in containers like stock tanks and quickly creates a dense screen.
